Residents and staff at several of GreenSquare's housing schemes for over 55 year olds across Oxfordshire have been sharing their love of music together through a variety of activities.
Country and western music is a firm favourite of many of the residents, so in the last couple of months staff have arranged for local singer and guitarist, Tony Hetherington from Wantage, to come and perform at some of the schemes including John Kallie Court, Meadowbrook and Lucas & Remy Place.
Residents have also been able to enjoy fish and chip suppers or a curry night while listening and dancing to well-loved, big hits such as Pretty Woman and Sweet Home Alabama.
Kasia Sikora-Smith, activities co-ordinator at GreenSquare, said: "Sharing our love of music together has reminded us of good old times and also provided opportunities to engage with more people from our communities. We all know that performing or listening to music improves our mood and boosts our energy but can also make a difference to those suffering with conditions like dementia."
"I am really grateful to our community officers for their help and support in putting on these events and we can’t wait to organise more performances like Tony’s. We also have more fish and chip suppers planned for other schemes as they are so popular!"
GreenSquare manage housing schemes for people aged 55 and over across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire.
Other activities recently organised for residents include a visit by local Police Community Support Officers (PSCOs) from the Barton to talk about community safety in the area. The sessions took place at Meadowbrook and William Morris Court and were arranged by community officer Louise Harvey. "The residents really engaged well with the sessions and the PCSOs were great at answering their questions and addressing any concerns," she said. "We are going to be arranging more of these in the future."
In early May, GreenSquare will be celebrating the ten-year anniversary of Alice & Margaret House, its housing scheme for over 55s in Rose Hill, Oxford. There will be a variety of activities for residents and the local community to enjoy.
