GreenSquare team raises nearly £3,000 for MS Society

A team of staff from across housing group GreenSquare has raised nearly £3,000 for the MS Society after completing a gruelling 126 mile journey up the Thames in a canoe.

The four colleagues: Rich Innes, Housing Manager (55+ team); Mark Smart, Development Quality and Design Manager; Rodger Shipway, Marketing and Sales Manager; and Andrew Smith, Operations Director raised an incredible £2,900 for the MS Society by completing a gruelling six-day challenge in May, when they set off from Castle Eaton in two large Canadian canoes and made their way 126 miles up the Thames to Teddington Lock.

The team carried all their kit with them, and paddled an average of 20 miles each day. At night, they stayed at various campsites along the river – stopping at places such as Abingdon and Hurley, near Maidenhead – as well as ‘wild camping’ on some nights.

Rich Innes said: “We definitely had a few tough moments along the way, battling through some terrible wind and rain at the start of the week, but the second half of the journey was a bit more plain sailing thanks to the sunny weather.

“All of us are experienced canoeists, who have been keen to go on an adventure like this for a while. We thought this journey would be the perfect opportunity to not only challenge ourselves physically and mentally, but also to raise as much money as possible for the MS Society, which is a charity that is very close to our hearts.

“We’re absolutely delighted with how much we have raised for the MS Society – and are overwhelmed with how generously people donated.”

There are currently over 100,000 people in the UK living with MS, and the MS Society is the leading for people affected by the condition. People typically start experiencing symptoms in their 20s or 30s, which can include sight loss, pain, fatigue, incontinence and disability.

Andy Jarret, area fundraiser for the MS Society, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Rich, Mark, Rodger and Andrew for organising such a successful fundraiser! Their generous donation will help us fund research to beat MS and provide life-changing support to people affected by the condition.”
