Grand opening of The Venue@Cowley only days away

We are only days away from the grand opening of our exciting new community venue in Cowley, Oxford – The Venue@Cowley – and everyone is welcome to come along to celebrate the official opening at an event this Saturday (4 June).

The state-of-the-art community facilities, which include a main hall, four rooms, a modern kitchen, gardens and internet access, have been built, and are being run, by GreenSquare. They are located on the ground floor of a development of 40 new flats that we have built on Barns Road, known as Barns Place.

Everyone is welcome to come along to the grand opening event on Saturday (4 June) from 1pm until 4pm, when the Lord Mayor of Oxford Councillor Mohammed Altaf-Khan will be cutting the ribbon to declare the centre officially open.

Here's a look at the timings for the day:

1pm – event begins and people are welcome to look at stalls and explore The Venue@Cowley

1.45pm – a special performance from the Leys CDI and Ark T Community Singing Group

2pm – ribbon cutting by Lord Mayor of Oxford Councillor Mohammed Altaf-Khan to declare The Venue officially open

2.30pm – Cowley Heroes presentation by Councillor David Henwood (click here to find out more)

Throughout the afternoon, there will be children's activities taking place and tea, coffee and cake will be available, as well as a smoothie bike for people to make some pedal-powered smoothies.

As well as staff from GreenSquare, there will be representatives from Ark T, Emmaus, Workers' Educational Association, Oxford Council's recycling team, and the Museum of Oxford on hand to talk to visitors.

Richard Grant, GreenSquare’s Marketing and Community Development Worker for The Venue, said: "We are really excited about the grand opening event and are counting down the days until we cut the ribbon to declare the centre officially open!

"The Venue@Cowley is going to be a fantastic meeting place and base for local people to enjoy a range of social, cultural and educational activities at the heart of the community. It's ideal for all sorts of meetings and conferences, learning and exercise classes, community activities and parties, and we’re sure it’s going be very popular.”

The Venue@Cowley features artwork by internationally acclaimed artist, Martin Richman, who specialises in light and sculpture and has had work featured in the Olympic Park and the BBC’s Broadcasting House. Martin will also be available to talk about his artwork.
