Kandu Kicks, the Chippenham-based inclusion through football project, is preparing to host its annual Kandu Cup event this August 2013.
This year's Kandu Cup will be taking place at 11am on Sunday 4 August 2013 at Stanley Park, Chippenham. The event forms part of the StreetGames Neighbourhood Festival scheme and will see the Kandu Kicks’ footballers compete against one another, other local inclusion teams and against a special entrant, which this year is a team from Wiltshire Police.
The football project, which was set up in partnership with GreenSquare, is delivered weekly by community group Kandu Arts. It has established itself as one of the most popular local sporting opportunities for those aged 13-19 from Chippenham, who might have previously faced barriers to following their talent, interest or passion for sport.
The project and it's tournaments have proven a useful platform for members of the police and neighborhood safety teams to build relationships with young people in the local community. Since the launch of the project, Kandu Kicks has gone on to attract some new key partners in addition to GreenSquare, including the Wiltshire Football Association, the Inspire Mark team and the StreetGames national charity.
Helen Barbrook, Head of Community Involvement (Wiltshire) at GreenSquare, said: “We are delighted to support this project, which not only allows young people to indulge in their passion for sport but is a fantastic way to build confidence and encourage teamwork. Projects like this encourage social inclusion and it’s great to see so many young people, including GreenSquare residents, getting involved and enjoying themselves. Very best of luck to everyone who is competing in the Cup.”
Michelle Redfern, Kandu Project co-coordinator said: “Everyone is looking forward to the forthcoming events and we are delighted the police are continuing to engage with the programme - it looks like it's going to be a great contest for the 2013 Cup.
“The young people involved in this project are showing real commitment and many have thrived on the opportunities that go beyond the football training itself. We are very grateful to our fantastic supporters and funders including GreenSquare, Wiltshire Council, The Swindon and Wiltshire Community Foundation, Comic Relief, Stanley Park and the Police and Crime Commissioner for Swindon and Wiltshire. They have all been keen to support the project as a way to engage young people in our communities and help to build key life skills.”
