Team enter final day of ‘oar-some’ fundraising challenge

A team of staff from across GreenSquare has entered the final stretch of their momentous 126 mile journey along the Thames in a canoe, and has already raised more than £2,000 for the MS Society.

The four GreenSquare colleagues: Rich Innes, House Manager (55+ team); Mark Smart, Development Quality and Design Manager; Rodger Shipway, Marketing and Sales Manager; and Andrew Smith, Operations Director are paddling the final 17 miles of their journey today en route to their final destination of Teddington Lock, and have already raised a fantastic £2,135 for the Society – with the total continuing to rise.

The team began their grueling six-day challenge on Sunday 1 May, setting off from Castle Eaton in two large Canadian canoes, carrying all their kit with them, and paddling an average of 20 miles each day. At night, they have been staying at various campsites along the river – stopping at places such as Abingdon and Hurley, near Maidenhead – as well as ‘wild camping’ on some nights.

Rich Innes said: “We have definitely had a few tough moments along the way, battling through some terrible wind and rain at the start of the week, but the second half of the journey has been a bit more plain sailing thanks to the sunny weather and we are excited to be nearing our final destination.

“All of us are experienced canoeists, who have been keen to go on this adventure for a while. We thought this would be the perfect opportunity to not only challenge ourselves physically and mentally, but also to raise as much money as we can for the MS Society, which is a charity that is very close to our hearts.

We’re absolutely delighted with how much we have raised for the MS Society so far – and have been overwhelmed with how generously people have been donating.”

There are currently over around 100,000 people in the UK living with MS. The MS Society funds research; gives grants; campaigns for change; provides information and support; invests in MS specialists; and lends a listening ear to those who need it.

The team are updating a Facebook group here, so that people can follow their progress and find out how the team is getting on. You can also keep an eye out on GreenSquare’s Twitter feed – @greensquare_grp – and follow the hashtag #thamescanoechallenge.
