Organisations supporting young people in Gloucestershire have the opportunity to sign up to a new project, aimed at encouraging young people to get involved with rugby and community events, as the county prepares to play host to this year's rugby World Cup.
The Try Rugby Project, set up by GreenSquare and the Rugby Football Union (RFU), is looking for local support services and organisations in the county, who would be keen to get involved with the project and prepared to host their own rugby coaching sessions - with help from RFU trained coaches - for the young people they support.
The project aims to engage young people who aren't normally involved with sporting or community activities. GreenSquare, working in partnership with the RFU, has put together a starter pack with everything an organisation would need to host their own rugby sessions. And for those who aren't keen on playing rugby, the project offers other opportunities for young people to get involved by helping to document the project and take on roles as photographers, press officers, film producers and more.
James Aldridge, Community Involvement Officer for GreenSquare’s Gloucestershire Housing Support team, said: "With the rugby World Cup coming to Gloucester in September, we thought it would be good to foster some excitement about the event and get people into rugby throughout the summer. And we are calling on all local organisations who work with people aged 16-25 to get in touch if they'd like to be involved.
"Our briefing pack sets out a timeline of events for organisations to follow and provides them with information to enable them to run their own Try Rugby project. The services will be asked to hold their own training sessions, supported by RFU coaches, in a location near their service. And we will be there to support them every step of the way!
"If we get enough rugby training sessions up and running, the aim is to put into practice everything the participants have learnt at a fun rugby tournament in Gloucester Park in September, to tie in with the start of the World Cup, followed by social evening and celebration in October as the World Cup comes to an end."
Deadline for sign up is Friday 24 July. If you're part of a support service who'd like to get involved, please contact James Aldridge at firstname.lastname@example.org
