Shoppers in Swindon say “Yes to Homes!”

Shoppers in Swindon town centre pledged their support for the national Homes for Britain campaign to end the housing crisis this morning (9 March), by adding a ‘brick’ to a giant display wall in the town centre.

Staff and board members from GreenSquare stood alongside ‘Betsy’, the Homes for Britain branded double-decker bus, at Wharf Green (underneath the big screen), where they took the opportunity to speak to passers-by about the campaign.

Well over a hundred members of the public showed their support for the campaign by signing a petition to say “Yes to Homes” and sticking a paper brick to a large picture of a house. Councillor David Renard, Leader of Swindon Council, also took the time to add a brick to the wall and pledge his support.

Howard Toplis, GreenSquare’s chief executive, explained: “There was an overwhelming support of the campaign’s message from everyone we spoke to – from people in the town who were struggling with homelessness to those that simply recognised that everyone deserves a home to call their own. It was great to speak to so many people who were keen to spread the message that we need more homes for Britain.

“The National Housing Federation has recently highlighted that 240,000 homes need to be built every year in the UK to keep pace with demand for housing. GreenSquare is a leading provider of affordable homes in Swindon and across Wiltshire, so we are proud to be able to help address the increasing demand for housing in the area. But we can’t do it alone – we need all the political parties to invest more and help end the housing crisis for good.”Homes for Britain is campaigning for the next government to come up with a long-term plan to tackle the housing crisis within a year of getting into office. It is being backed by thousands of people up and down the country who have joined forces with organisations from every corner of the housing world.”
