GreenSquare celebrated the official opening of The Paddocks, its new extra care housing development of 44 homes in Milton-Under-Wychwood, yesterday (Thursday, 22 October) with an event for residents, local councillors, and staff involved with the project.

The Paddocks, located off Shipton Road, is one of two extra care developments GreenSquare has built in West Oxfordshire, which are the first of their kind in the area. The development comprises 44 modern and luxurious one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments for shared ownership and rent, and offers independent living for the over-55s, with flexible care options.

Facilities at The Paddocks include: a comfortable lounge; fully-equipped restaurant and Post Office, which are available for the rest of the community to use; therapy room; TV room; and hairdressers – as well as staff and consultation facilities. Residents can take part in organised activities, such as a light exercise class, organised by the on-site activities co-ordinator.

At the event, Derek Cash, Chair of GreenSquare’s Development and Investment Committee, presented residents with a bird table for the communal garden area to mark the official opening of the development. Guests were treated to a performance by a ‘speech choir’ of residents and enjoyed lunch in the on-site restaurant.

Derek said: “The first thing that really strikes you about the development is its idyllic rural location – the view across the fields is quite stunning! But most importantly the residents all seem to really enjoy living here.

“To tackle the housing crisis, we don’t just need to build more homes, we need to build more of the types of homes that people need – with an increasingly ageing population in West Oxfordshire, the area needs the types of homes we’ve built at the Paddocks, which are designed with integrated care services and with older people in mind.”

Maisie Tucker and her dog Kate were the first residents to move into The Paddocks in August and are delighted with their new home. Maisie said: “Moving here was the best thing I could have done. Before I came here, I’d been living with my son for support because I was no longer able to live on my own in my bungalow. Here I have my independence but I also have the security of having care staff around, who can help me if I need it.

“My apartment has two bedrooms so my daughter can stay with me when she visits and I’ve made a lot of new friends. I’ve been making the most of all the facilities – it’s nice to have the option to eat in the restaurant rather than eating alone, and I have my hair done once a week in the hairdressers. It’s great! I really couldn’t have found anywhere better than this. I feel like I’ve got my life back.”

In Witney, GreenSquare built Fernleigh, an extra care development of 80 apartments, which celebrated its opening last month (September). Both developments benefited from strong support by Oxfordshire County Council and West Oxfordshire District Council and from a £3million investment from the Homes and Communities Agency.

Stephanie Ainsworth, Area Manager at the HCA said:“We are thrilled to see The Paddocks and Fernleigh open, and that our funding has helped to create such high quality developments. GreenSquare is a valued partner for the provision of extra care housing in the region and I know these developments will make a fantastic home for older people in Oxfordshire.”
