Staff and residents at GreenSquare will be showcasing a film documenting memories, stories and recollections of World War II at an event next month (May), to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day).
The 'Memories of War' film pieces together interviews of Oxfordshire residents who lived through the turbulent World War II period, documenting experiences of people who saw action both abroad and on home soil, and describing the daily struggles of living and growing up in a country at war.
Rich Innes, House Manager at GreenSquare, coordinated the making of the film. He said: "With 2015 being the 70th anniversary of VE Day – the formal celebration of the Allies’ victory following the Nazi surrender in 1945 – myself and many of the GreenSquare residents I support were keen to mark the occasion in some way.
“The project started in January 2015 and over the course of the filming so many remarkable stories have been told by Oxfordshire war veterans with first-hand combat experience as well as by people who remember rationing in Britain, and those that were there for the very first VE Day celebrations.”
The film will be screened at a special street party-themed event taking place at The Barn in Greater Leys, Oxford from 6pm until 8.30pm on Friday, 8 May. Residents who took part in the documentary, as well as their families, friends and GreenSquare staff have been invited to attend.
Members of the Bicester Home Guard & Home Front Living History Group will also be attending the event dressed in traditional World War II uniforms and representatives from Help for Heroes will be on hand to talk about their fund raising efforts in Oxfordshire.
Rich added: "I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone involved with the project. We’re delighted to be able to share some incredible and poignant memories in our film and we’re all really looking forward to the premiere, which we hope will be a fitting commemoration of one of the most important events in recent British history.”
