GreenSquare’s housing support service in Gloucester has been awarded a total of £15,537 in funding from Gloucestershire County Council, to enable it to run more community-based workshops and better support its clients.
The service offers short-term, intensive community-based support to vulnerable adults in Gloucester, Forest of Dean and Tewkesbury, who are at risk of losing their home or need housing-related advice or support. It aims to prevent crisis with early intervention, but if crisis occurs it can provide support to help a client cope and move forward.
GreenSquare has been awarded £11,166 to run workshops across all three districts where the housing support service operates, to show people how to eat and cook healthily on a budget. The funding has been awarded as part of Gloucestershire County Council’s Healthy Together Scheme, which supports health and wellbeing priorities in each district area.
Juliet Tigwell, GreenSquare’s Housing Support Service Manager, said: “We are delighted that our bid for funding has been successful. Many of the people we support have asked for help with cooking healthy food on a budget and expressed a real interest in learning these skills, so we have no doubt that these workshops will be valuable.”
In Tewkesbury, GreenSquare has been awarded an additional £4,371 from the Healthy Together Scheme to support the delivery of a New Friends Network – a group which supports vulnerable adults in the community who are socially isolated. The network arranges and creates a safe space for people to meet, and organises activities and events for its members.
Juliet said: “Over the past 18 months, we have supported nearly 500 vulnerable adults in Tewkesbury many of whom are socially isolated due to mental health issues, anxiety, lack of confidence or lack of inclusion in their communities.
“By setting up a New Friends Network in the area, we’ll be able to make a real difference to people who are socially isolated by giving them access to opportunities which are otherwise inaccessible to them. This will help to increase their confidence and knowledge of how they can seek their own support within their community.”
