GreenSquare resident Hilda Ravell celebrated her 100th birthday last week (Friday 10 November), and was thrown a surprise party by her friends and fellow residents at James House, GreenSquare's 55+ housing scheme in Calne.
The communal lounge was decorated with 100th birthday balloons and banners and everyone pitched in to provide a buffet lunch.
When asked to share her secrets for a long and happy life, Hilda said: "You just have to enjoy yourself and take life as it comes. Always be friendly and try to see the best in people. And join in with everything you can."
She continued: "I've lived in James House for the past 10 years and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Everyone is friendly and helpful. I was definitely surprised by my party today - but it was a lovely surprise!"
James House offers independent living with additional support, with 22 individual flats for residents over the age of 55. GreenSquare community officers help to put on a variety of activities and events in the communal loungefor residents to take part in, if they wish. These include regular afternoon tea events, fish and chips once a fortnight, and indoor games such as bowls, curling and hoy. Residents also organise their own activities including bingo and BBQs in the summer.
Rachel Lang, GreenSquare’s community officer, said: "Hilda has been living in her flat here in James House for a few years now and all the residents wanted to celebrate her birthday with her. It was their idea to thrown a surprise party – we don't get much occasion to celebrate a 100th birthday after all!
"There is a strong sense of community here and the majority of the residents like to join in and get involved with the activities on offer."
