Building work has been completed at a new affordable housing development in Chippenham.
The development at Middlefields, just off Hungerdown Lane in the town, comprises 34 new homes for a mixture of rent and shared ownership.
The site, which was formerly a school site, had been vacant for many years before GreenSquare jointly acquired the land with Lidl in July 2017, with a view to building a new supermarket and affordable housing.
Designed by GreenSquare’s in-house architects, and built by our in-house development arm GreenSquare Homes, construction began on the new homes in June 2019, once the supermarket had been completed.
Harvey Pitt, New Business and Development Manager at GreenSquare, explained:
“Middlefields started out as a predominantly shared ownership scheme, based on a 30% affordable rent and 70% shared ownership tenure split. However, thanks to a £2.1m grant from Homes England, we were able to shift this, to an almost opposite split of 65% rent and 35% shared ownership – this grant also enabled us to change the homes for rent from affordable to social rent, so the charges were made lower for customers.
“As part of this development, we also were granted planning consent to build a fully adapted bungalow to provide move on accommodation for people recovering from head and spinal injury, to be managed by our partner Aspire Care Services.
“This has been a great example of partnership working with Wiltshire Council and Homes England and also with numerous teams within GreenSquare. By working together, we have been able to bring more much needed affordable housing to Chippenham."
The properties are a mixture of two and three-bedroom homes, and one and two-bedroom flats, catering for a range of lifestyles, all finished to a high quality standard.
The shared ownership properties are now all sold, and the first residents have started to move into their new homes.
