GreenSquare celebrates completion of affordable homes in Calne

The completion of GreenSquare's newest housing development, which comprises entirely affordable housing, has been celebrated in Calne, Wiltshire.

The 12 new houses, designed by GreenSquare’s architects and built by GreenSquare's construction team, are located off Abberd Way and are a mixture of one-bedroom and two-bedroom properties for affordable rent.

A celebration was held at the development to mark the completion of the new houses, with local residents joining representatives from GreenSquare, Wiltshire Council, and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

A ribbon was cut by Nicky Collins and Martin Hooper, who have moved into one of the two-bedroom properties along with their two young children, Isla and Jenson.

Martin said: “There is a real shortage of affordable homes in the area, so when we found out these new homes were being built, we were really excited and are delighted to have been lucky enough to be allocated a house here."

He described moving into the new family home as "life-changing".

Nicky added: “We had been living with my father so this is our first place together and we just can't believe it's so nice. We're all settled in and it already feels like home."

GreenSquare began work at the site in October 2016, when 38 garages and an empty block of flats were demolished to make way for the new properties and to bring much needed affordable housing to the area.

Howard Toplis, GreenSquare's chief executive, said: "This is a fantastic development – the properties are built to a really high quality and they look great, blending in well with the surrounding area.

"In Wiltshire, like most places across the country, there is a shortage of homes that people can afford to live in, so we're proud to be able to build developments like this one that offer all affordable homes.

"It was really good to speak to some of our newest residents at the event and it's wonderful to hear that people already feel at home here."

The development benefited from £450,000 funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

Peter Jones, Head of Affordable Housing & Supply (South West) at the HCA, said: “Housing associations are working incredibly hard to provide high quality affordable homes for communities across Wiltshire. We are really pleased to have been able to work with our partners, GreenSquare, in enabling them to deliver these wonderful homes in Calne.”
