Community fund awards grant to local charity

GreenSquare has awarded dementia charity Daybreak Oxford a grant of over £400 to help fund its day clubs for people with dementia in Oxfordshire.

The funding is from the housing group’s Community Fund, a pot of £20,000 a year from which a panel of five residents and three staff award small grants to local groups and organisations in the Oxfordshire area. It allocates grants four times a year.

Community Fund panel member, Roger D’Arcy, said: “Having awarded Daybreak Oxford with £750 in May 2012 during an earlier round of grants, we are pleased to be able to award a further £425 to this worthy cause. The award will help fund the Daybreak Dementia Clubs, which greatly benefit the communities of Blackbird Leys and Greater Leys by providing respite for the carers of people with dementia and also socialisation and stimulation for those with dementia they care for.”

Daybreak Oxford is a specialised charity, which has been operating in the area for over 20 years. Sandy Briscoe, Fundraising Manager from Daybreak Oxford, added: “The majority of our current funding comes from Oxfordshire Social and Community Services, however, in addition we must raise funds from other independent sources to make up major shortfalls. We rely on the support of community funds such as these and are delighted that GreenSquare has chosen to grant us these valuable funds for the second time.

“The services that our clubs provide can be a lifeline for carers, who get to have some precious time to themselves. Our members very much enjoy our club days, which include gentle exercise sessions and musical entertainment. We have recently introduced activities such as a knitting circle, gardening therapy and extra music therapy, all of which have been very well received. A hot meal is provided and transport is arranged to enable attendance at our clubs.”

Daybreak Oxford is currently involved with 'The Big Give's Christmas Challenge’ - part of the Reed Foundation - which means that from 10am on Thursday, 6 December, all donations made to the charity via the Big Give website will be doubled.
