We recognise that noise nuisance can take place at any time of the day or night and on any day of the week. That is why we have subscribed to The Noise App.
What is The Noise App?
It is an app that anyone with a smartphone can download and use for free to record noise that is causing you a nuisance and send it direct to us.
Recordings are very useful for us when we are investigating a complaint of noise nuisance as a written description doesn’t always adequately convey the nuisance being caused – in particular in cases that involve someone repeatedly shouting.
The Noise App is easy to use and is a secure way to send your recordings to us. You can listen to your recordings before you send them and we can respond directly to you to let you know we have received them.
If you report noise nuisance to us, your housing officer may ask you if you have a smartphone and recommend you download The Noise App. This can be used alongside nuisance monitoring sheets that your housing officer will provide.
If you don’t have a smartphone we will still offer you a traditional portable recording device as before so that we can listen to some examples of the nuisance and understand what you are experiencing.
How do I get the app?
Please be aware that if you download the Noise App you will be expected to agree to the terms and conditions which can be viewed online here.
Once you have downloaded the app, you can create your account:
The app will allow you to take audio recordings of the noise for up to 30 seconds at a time and enter details about: the address where you think the noise is coming from; the type of noise; where you are recording it; how loud it is; and how it affects you.
What if the noise lasts longer than 30 seconds?
If the noise lasts for hours you should take recordings no more than once every 30 minutes. The point of the recordings is to show that the person creating the noise is being unreasonable either due to the time of day, because of the volume, or the nature of the noise e.g. frequent foul / abusive or threatening language.
Send your recording to your case officer – usually your housing officer - which they will receive a few minutes later. This service can be used out of hours and over the weekend when our offices are closed. We will pick up the recordings during normal office hours which are Monday to Friday 8.30am – 5.30pm.
As with any nuisance monitoring, we will advise your neighbour that monitoring will take place at any time in the next three months.
